How to Digitize VHS Tapes

The short answer
You can digitize a VHS tape by playing it in a suitable VCR and recording the analog output with a USB capture device or internal capture card. A DVD/VCR recorder is simpler but less flexible. If the tape is damaged, moldy, irreplaceable, or you lack working playback equipment, use a specialist service instead.

Inspect the cassette before playback
- Check the shell for cracks, loose parts, or tape pulled outside the cassette.
- Do not play a tape with visible mold, contamination, or serious physical damage; professional treatment may be needed.
- Confirm the cassette is VHS or S-VHS and that the VCR supports its television standard.
- Clean the playback path only with a method appropriate for the deck; a dirty or faulty VCR can damage tapes and the capture.

Connect and test the capture chain
- Connect the VCR's composite or S-video output and audio outputs to the capture device.
- Open the capture software, select the correct input and audio source, and preview the signal.
- Start with a non-critical cassette if the deck has not been used recently, then make a short test capture. Check picture stability, color, audio level, audio sync, and whether the frame is being cropped.
- Set a file name before the full capture so the recording is not saved under a generic default name.
Decide what file you are making
For preservation, keep the best practical capture as a master and make separate, smaller copies for viewing or sharing. A convenient access copy should not be the only version you retain.
There is no single file specification that fits every budget and workflow. Before a long capture, confirm the file type, expected size, storage location, and whether the result opens in the software you plan to use. A DVD recorder can simplify playback, but a computer file is generally easier to copy, edit, name, and back up.
Capture the tape in real time
Cue the tape slightly before the material you want, start recording in the capture software, then start playback. VHS capture runs in real time, so a two-hour recording takes about two hours to record.
Monitor the transfer. Stop if the tape sticks, sheds debris, produces severe tracking errors, or the cassette makes unusual mechanical noise. Do not repeatedly replay a problem section without diagnosing the cause.

Check, name, and back up the files
- Play the beginning, middle, and end of the captured file and verify audio remains synchronized.
- Use consistent file names that connect each file to the cassette label and capture date.
- Keep a high-quality master and make a smaller access copy if needed for sharing.
- Store at least two additional copies on separate devices, with one copy kept in another location. Keep the original tape until the files are verified and backed up.

- What playback equipment do you use, and can you apply time-base correction or noise reduction when a tape needs it?
- How do you handle mold, damaged shells, cleaning, or tape repair, and what extra charges can apply?
- Which file format and delivery method will I receive, and are downloadable files included?
- How will files be named, and can cassette labels or other metadata be carried into the order?
- How are tapes tracked, packed, insured, and returned during shipping?
- Can you process one trial tape before I commit an important collection?
A practical workflow for a collection
- Inventory every cassette and photograph or transcribe its label before playback or shipping.
- Separate visibly damaged or contaminated tapes and prioritize unique family recordings.
- Test the workflow with one ordinary tape before processing the most important material.
- Capture or send tapes in manageable batches so file naming and quality checks do not pile up.
- Log each completed file against its cassette, then make and verify the backups before moving to the next batch.
- A mixed approach is valid: capture straightforward tapes yourself and send problem tapes or uncommon formats to a specialist.
