Film reels

Estimate the cost of transferring Regular 8, Super 8, and 16mm home-movie film reels to digital.

Why digitize film reels?

Home-movie film on reels — Regular 8, Super 8, and 16mm — holds some of the oldest footage families own. Scanning it frame-by-frame preserves it before the film warps or vinegar syndrome sets in.

How pricing works

Film is usually priced by the foot or by reel size, so cost scales with how much film you have, not the number of reels. A tiny 3-inch reel holds far less than a 7-inch one. Enter each reel's diameter above so the estimate reflects real footage.

How to identify what you have

Measure the reel diameter in inches. Regular 8 and Super 8 are both 8mm-wide film (Super 8 has smaller, squarer sprocket holes); 16mm is visibly wider. If you're unsure, add the reel and pick the closest diameter.

What do the confidence labels mean?
  • exact published price: Taken directly from the provider's current published price.
  • estimated published price: Bounded from official pages where an exact figure isn't listed.
  • partial estimate: Some fees (e.g. shipping or checkout-only charges) aren't fully confirmed.
  • quote required: The provider doesn't publish enough to compute a confident total.
  • conflicting sources: Official surfaces disagree — verify on the provider's site before ordering.

Frequently asked questions

How is film digitization priced?

Most providers charge per foot of film or by reel-size tiers, so a 7-inch reel costs more than a 3-inch reel. We estimate footage from the reel diameters you enter.

What's the difference between Regular 8 and Super 8?

Both use 8mm-wide film. Super 8 came later and has smaller sprocket holes, fitting a larger image per frame. Pricing is usually similar between the two.

Can they add sound or music?

Some services offer optional editing or music; that's typically an add-on beyond the base scan. The base comparison reflects standard transfer only.
